Understanding the value of a photograph

It’s easy to brush off photography as a hobby or something people do in their spare time. While that may be true for some, it’s not the case for me. What I enjoy most about the photography work I do is knowing that I’ve given someone something that will one day be priceless. This is what makes it meaningful to me.

I see value in moments that others may not yet realize are treasures in the making. Ask someone what they’d give for a photograph of themselves with their mother, father, grandparent, or child—someone who is no longer here. Or even a photograph of their child at a specific age or during a fleeting moment in time. Chances are, they’d give anything to have that memory preserved, even if it’s just through a photograph.

My style of photography focuses on capturing the emotion of the moment or the raw personality of someone. Because when it comes down to it, in the future, you won’t care if the angle was slightly off or if your hair wasn’t perfect—you’ll only feel how special that moment was. I don’t take photographs for others to admire aesthetically; I take them to ensure they age well over the years, preserving memories that you can look back on and cherish.

Why is it that the best photographs we have from our youth are often the most imperfect ones, yet we love them the most?

Life is made up of moments and connections, and my creative work serves as a channel to preserve and celebrate them.

My Story

Don’t put your camera down…

My first memory of owning a camera was when my oldest brother gifted me one. I was about 11 years old, and I had so much fun taking countless selfies with my cousin, as well as capturing moments with my siblings—their births, their birthdays, and now their graduations. Growing up in a big family with 7 siblings always gave me something exciting to photograph, and those moments always included the people I love.

I remember going to my cousin’s quinceañera and bringing my first DSLR camera to capture this special event. She performed a traditional Mexican folklórico dance in a gorgeous dress, and I was so proud to preserve those moments. Later that evening, I set my camera down and went to the restroom. When I came back, I couldn’t find it. After frantically searching, I finally discovered it submerged in a punchbowl filled with liquid and ice.

In 2018, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Japan. I debated whether to bring my beloved full-frame Canon 5D III DSLR with me on the journey. Someone gave me simple but wise advice: “Take it with you, capture beautiful photographs, and to ensure nothing happens to it—never take it off or put it down.” I held onto that advice and followed it religiously. I was so proud of myself for keeping it safe throughout my time in Japan, and I cherished that camera for years.

Until 2022, that is. I was photographing a maternity session at Windansea Beach in La Jolla, CA. Although I had shot there many times and was familiar with the tide’s quick changes, I wasn’t prepared for the unlucky day when a huge wave crashed over me, soaking all my gear and my camera. The good news? Even when a camera experiences water damage, the memory card stays safe.
